Leki SP Standard Round Rubber Tip Review

This accessory is a brand specific rubberised tip designed for use with Leki Trekking Poles but how many of us ever use these?

This trekking pole accessory is designed to slip over the tips of your Leki trekking poles for those times when you are using you poles in residential areas on concrete and bitumen (asphalt) or when you are hiking on rock surfaces. Using the carbide tips that come with most trekking poles on hard surfaces doesn’t work very well because they just don’t provide purchase and grip you need.

To overcome this issue there are two options that manufacturers of trekking poles provide. The first is replacement rubberised tips. In this option you detach the carbide tops and replace them with small rubberised tips. I do own several pairs of trekking poles that have this option and in all honesty I never do.

The second option requires putting a rubber tip over the carbide tip (like a sock). This is a much easier option and this option is the subject of this review. In this option you just slide the rubber tip on and tap it down to make sure it stays in place. I use this option with my Leki Cross Trail FX Superlite Poles which are the poles I use when I do longer street walks. They are also an easy option to use on-trail when you are crossing longer rocky sections or rock platforms and as the tips only weigh 32 grams for the pair, they aren’t a big weight impost.

One of the other benefits that the rubberised tips are said to deal with is the ‘clicking noise’ that poles make on hard surfaces. A non-issue from my perspective but it may be one that bothers some people or those hiking with you.

I always purchase this type of accessory if they are available given the relatively minimal cost (AUD $29.99 RRP), minimal weight impost (32 grams). I regularly use my poles around the streets and on hikes with rocky surfaces so I usually carry them ‘just in case’.
