Underwear is one of those pieces of clothing that many men don’t put a lot of thought into, but should! As a piece of clothing these get about as up close and personal as you can so comfort is critical particularly when you are doing long distance multi-day hikes. The boxer style construction with its flat lock seams helps to minimise chafing on the legs and they don’t bunch up. These boxers also have seams that curve around the buttocks which feels a bit strange at first but this additional seaming helps to keep them snug in all the right places. The material is stretchy so while I usually wear a medium to large in my normal street underwear I wear a medium size in the Exofficio range and they fit comfortably.
The short legs on these underpants minimise chafing in the inner thighs and if you have ever had this occur it’s not pleasant. In the four years that I have been wearing these I have never had a chafing issue with the Exofficios.
Usually I try to avoid synthetic underwear as I find they tend to sweat and feel clammy however the mesh construction feels like they are made of natural fibre and this allows them to breathe; even on the longest hikes you stay comfortable.
One big advantage of the synthetic construction is the ability to dry very quickly when they get wet. This means that unless its constantly pouring with rain, you can very easily get by with rotating two pairs on your trips. They will usually dry overnight in mild to warm conditions. I have used this underwear in snow conditions in Switzerland through to hikes in central Australia and find they are equal to the challenge.
Price wise these underpants aren’t cheap but they last really well and are super comfortable .You should definitely give them a go!
