Campers Pantry Porridge with Apple, Banana and Hemp Review

Campers Pantry continues to refine and expand its range and recently released two new breakfast options in the form of Porridge with Apple, Banana and Hemp, along with Porridge with Apple, Blueberries, and Hemp.

So first up let’s deal with the question on most people’s mind – hemp? While most will associate hemp with marijuana the plant itself has multiple uses including clothing. And yes, hemp is considered a superfood given it’s high in fibre, high in protein and is good for heart health. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, it’s a perfect fit as a completely plant-based protein source. That’s especially important, as many vegans and vegetarians don’t always get the necessary amount of protein due to a lack of animal protein in their diet.

The ingredient list is very simple and when taste testing this porridge I could tell that this was a banana based offering but the banana didn’t dominate the taste. In fact, I expected this porridge to be overly sweet and was pleasantly surprised. This meal is well balanced, not too heavy and not too sweet.

This meal is a twin serve and I wholeheartedly agree. I tested this one as a lunch time meal and there was no way I was going to finish it in one sitting. If you’re travelling solo then you need to either split the packet or rehydrate in a seperate container. Speaking of rehydrating – the recommendation is to add 200 ml of either cold or hot water and let sit for 10 minutes although you may need longer if you use cold water. I opted for hot water and found that 200 ml left me with something very heavy and solid so to get the consistency I wanted, I ended up adding a total of 240 ml. Having said that, you can always add more water if you want a more liquid consistency but if you add too much water you’re stuck with it.

The combination of ingredients in this meal provides a good level fibre, protein and calories. The thing I really find with porridge as a breakfast is that it keeps you fuelled well into the morning.

For me there were no real negatives to this meal and its probably the best commercial porridge I have tried.

If you are a porridge fan then this offering from Campers Pantry is well worth considering.
