Campers Pantry Hummus Review

Hummus probably ranks as one of the most popular, if not the most popular, dip around. While I’m sure there are people who don’t like it, it seems to be rare. For many years I’ve been making my own dehydrated hummus for longer hiking trips but every so often I find I just don’t have the time.

Recently Campers Pantry released a range of three dips including Hummus, Spicy Capsicum Dip and Beetroot Dip and my hike on the Tasmanian Trail in 2021 provided a great opportunity to test them out. This hummus is actually a commercial product that Campers Pantry has put through the freeze drying process and they’ve done it well. I tend to find many commercial hummus offerings to be a bit vinegary in taste but not this one. While vinegar is one of the ingredients it’s not overpowering. This version of hummus is not very spicy which is a good starting point and if you feel like spicing it up you can always add a bit of paprika.

This dip comes in a 100 gram packet and contains five 20 gram serves but having said that, if you are using this as a meal then splitting this into two servings is more realistic and makes more sense. If all you want is a snack then smaller serving sizes would be fine. Typically I tend to eat the hummus by itself prefering just to mix it up in a peanut butter jar and at other times I’ll eat it with flatbread but this depends on what I feel like on the day.

The only negative with this product is the price coming in at around $5.50 per 50 gram serve so if you feel like making your own, you can do it much cheaper. What it comes down to is can you be bothered and can you achieve the same flavour or would you be better off pre buying and be done with the effort? That’s going to be the real decision point. Limited time is an issue for me so I will keep the Campers Pantry Hummus as part of my hiking rotation.

We Like

  • Not spicy, great for all taste buds. Who doesn’t love hummus?
  • Minimal preparation time. All you are doing is rehydrating this dip – just add cold water and its ready to eat
  • Prepare in a seperate container and use as much or as little as you like
  • Freeze dried. This takes much of the weight out of the meal and helps to limit the weight in your pack

We Don't Like

  • The main negative of any commercially preprepared dehydrated or freeze dried food is the cost. It really comes down to whether you have the available time to make your own and if you can achieve the same flavour

Best Uses

  • Great option for lunch or dinner
