Back Country Cuisine Instant Rice Review

This Instant Rice product is another food option from Back Country Cuisine. The Back Country Cuisine range of outdoor meals is probably the best known in Australia. Many people consider them the staple meal choice for activities. There is a huge range of options and while most outdoor stores stock their preferences, the Instant Rice is usually available.

Back Country Cuisine Instant Rice is as the name suggests, rice that has been freeze-dried and is therefore super-lightweight. The product also contains canola oil and I assume it is just a ‘touch’ but the pack doesn’t say. This instant rice is gluten-free and great for adding an energy boost to your meals on the trail. There are five serves per pack and each serve 143 kcal and 2.7 grams of protein.

The cooking requirements are very simple – just add 1½ cups (375 mls) of boiling water to the 160 gram pack and wait for 10 minutes. I suggest you add a bit more water (perhaps 20 mls) depending on your rice preference. If you’re wanting cold rice, add cold water and wait for at least 90 minutes.

You can also add the rice when cooking other meals by adding ½ cup (125 mls) of water for each cup of rice. If you are creative, you can add freeze-dried vegetables or meat, or just some spices for a standalone meal.

The taste test went well. It tastes just like rice!

We Like

• Three year warranty which means you can buy these when you see them discounted thereby reducing the price. You also know the meals will always be edible
• Minimal preparation time.  All you are doing is rehydrating these meals so once you add boiling water there’s only a 10 minute wait
• If you eat from the bag there is only your eating implement to clean up. In fact you may not even need to carry a bowl at all thereby limiting the weight you carry
• Freeze dried. This takes much of the weight out and helps to limit the impact on your body

We Don't Like

• The main negative of any commercially pre prepared freeze dried food is the cost. But at $6.99 for a 160 gram pack and $1.40 per serve – this Instant Rice is great value
