The Australian Hiker podcast turned five years old at the end of 2021 and is Australia’s longest running and most downloaded hiking podcast. But what hiking and outdoor related podcasts does Australian Hiker listen to? In this episode we provide a brief overview of what’s on Tim’s podcast listening queue that covers a range of different styles.

  • Episodes vary widely in length but average around 45 minutes
  • The presentation style is technical and formal
  • Usually presented by two co-hosts often with guests

Backpacker Radio

  • Another US hiking podcast that focuses on long distance trails and thru hiking
  • 199 episodes released as at 5 May 2023
  • Release between three to four episodes a month
  • Episodes vary in length but average around 2.5 hours
  • The presentation style varies widely, while typically lighthearted in nature, episodes are sometimes silly, sometimes serious and everywhere in between
  • Usually presented by two co-hosts often with guests

Real Trail Talk

  • This Australian hiking podcast covers a range of topics with a focus on trails, in particular Western Australia. Also touches on other recreational activities
  • 88 episodes released as at 4 May 2023
    • Currently producing on an irregular basis as at May 2023
  • Episodes vary in length from around 30-90 minutes but average around 50 minutes
  • The presentation style is friendly and relaxed
  • Usually presented by two co-hosts often with guests

Snowys Camping Show

  • This Australian camping podcast focuses on car camping, 4×4, caravanning and hiking
  • 99 episodes released as at 21 April 2023
  • Release frequency averages just under weekly
  • Episodes average 25 minutes in length
  • The presentation style is friendly and relaxed providing information in an easy to understand format
  • Usually presented by two co-hosts often with guests

 

 

The Outdoors Station

  • This UK hiking podcast covers a range of topics with a focus on ‘self powered travelling’ e.g. hiking, paddling, cycling etc
  • 562 episodes released as at 4 May 2022
  • One of the longest if not the longest running outdoor podcast worldwide starting in 2005
  • Release frequency varies. Sometimes weekly but will then go a number of weeks or months without an episode
  • Episodes vary in length but average around 50-60 minutes
  • The presentation style varies widely. If I have to compare the hosts presentation style to anyone he is similar to David Attenborough
  • Usually presented by single host usually with guests

The Trail Show

  • This US hiking podcast focuses on long distance hiking with the motto of ‘More Beer, less gear’. Covers a range of topics typically on long distance trails
  • 129 episodes released as at 4 May 2023
  • Average one episode a month
  • Episodes vary in length but average around 2.5 hours but often longer
  • The presentation style varies widely, typically lighthearted in nature, often silly, and best described as ‘irreverent’
  • Usually presented by a panel of hosts (four), usually with guests

Walking Distance

  • This US hiking podcast focuses on unique topics, often more niche, relating to long distance hiking and often not covered anywhere else
  • 21 episodes released as at 4 May 2023
    • The latest episode was released in 2021
  • Release two episodes a month but appears to be in Hiatus as of early 2022
  • Episodes average around 30 minutes in length
  • The presentation style is very pleasant and more professionally presented than its sister podcast, Backpacker Radio
