MSR Universal Gas Canister Stand Review
We don’t always have the luxury of setting up a gas canister stove on a flat stable bench and even when we do by the time we add the stove unit and then a pot it makes for an unstable unit that could so easily be knocked over, particularly when using the 100-110gram size canisters which are small. This is why its best to use a stand like this MSR Universal Gas Canister Stand to provide a stable platform to not only keep your food safe but also to prevent boiling water/hot food being knocked over potentially injuring the user.
Probably the main canister stand in the market is the orange plastic Jetboil stand and I do own a number of these that come with the stove kits. In the case of the MSR Universal Gas Canister Stand this unit weights in at 34grams which is 7 grams heavier than the Jetboil unit and in addition is around twice the price. So when then would you buy this unit. For me there are two main reasons. First and foremost the arms on the MSR canister stand are longer than the Jetboils which means that you have a more stable platform for your stove unit. Secondly this MSR unit has a slide mechanism which makes it very easy to lock in the gas canister, there is no effort required unlike the Jetboil which does take a small amount of force, all be it very minor to lock in the gas canisters.
The shape and size of the two units vary with the Jetboil folding into a triangular shaped unit that is designed to sit in the bottom of the stove unit and provides a base for the small gas canisters. In the case of the MSR Universal Gas Canister Stand it folds down into what looks like a flat pocket knife. As mentioned the RRP price of this unit is AUD$53.99 which is more than twice the price of the Jetboil if purchased separately. It’s worth noting that the MSR stand is often on special so unless you are in a rush buy its at a cheaper price.
If you are using the Jetboil kit then I’d be inclined to stay with the Jetboil stand however if you are building your own kit and want then ultimate stability for your canister stove unit then I would definitely pay the extra for the MSR Universal Gas Canister Stand.
