Real Meals Oodles of Noodles Review

In working my way through the Real Meal freeze dried range I didn’t sit down and work out the order in which I was going to eat them, it was more about what I liked the look of on the day. In testing any meal I initially spend a bit of time going over the ingredients and nutrients that come with the meal. In this case I was a bit stunned on the level of salt contained in the Real Meals Oodles of Noodles. High levels of salt/sodium is considered to be anything over 400mg/100g and in this case it contains 891mg/ 100grams which is much higher than our recently tested Real Meals Beef Stroganoff, particularly when you consider that this is a youth meal. In the case of the stroganoff meal I found the salt levels to be too high for my tastes given we don’t add salt to our food. Based on that I had my doubts about this meal option.

Having said that while this is a salty meal it doesn’t have the ‘salt taste’ of the stroganoff so for most hikers it will probably be ok. Consistency wise I added the recommended 250ml of water and while every other Real Meal that we have tested the water levels have been spot on but in this case I would suggest adding around another 10-15 mls because the recommended amount of water produced a meal that was a bit ‘stodgy’ in consistency.

Still on the taste this is a chicken noodle based meal that is also loaded with soy sauce which to some degree explains the saltiness. While I found this meal to be ok taste wise it didn’t wow me and based on that there are to many7 other options in the Real Meal range as well as other brands that are preferable to this one. The one bonus that this meal has is that it contains 33.9 grams of protein which is ideal at the end of a ling day to help rebuild your body.

At AUD $19.99 RRP the Real Meals Oodles of Noodles is towards the higher end of the single serve freeze dried range but it is filling. As mentioned this isn’t going to be a meal that suits either Gill or I but if you like saltiness in your meal and and want something warm and filling then this may well suit you.
