The Real Meals Mexi Nachos is one of those meals that warms the stomach on a cold day. I’m a big fan of Mexican food but its worth noting that this meal only has a very low level of spice which I’d class as ‘heat’ and the majority of hikers wont be offended by this meal.
First up let’s look at the ‘pros’ of this meal. This is essentially a plant based meals however does contain eggs, dairy products, and gelatine so depending on how opposed to animal products you are you can’t really be called vegan as such. As mentioned this meal left me with a warm feeling after eating it and given it comes with a 500 calories load it will help support you on the long cold days. It definitely has that Mexican/nacho taste as well with the meal size being good for a single hiker. Price wise at AUD $21.99 RRP is sits within the typical freeze dried meal pricing range so isn’t overly expensive.
Now let’s deal with the negatives. Other companies offer similar products and seperate out the nacho component to add just before eating thereby keeping that crunchy texture however in this case the nachos as mixed in with the rest of the ingredients and as a result go soft prior to eating. If Real Meals had of separated out there nachos I would have scored this meal at a higher rating as the texture of dry nachos provides a big boost over and above the taste factor. If It really othered me that much I’d pull the nachos chips out before adding water. The only other negative for me is that while this meal is tasty it’s still on the lower end of the spice range for my taste buds which in all honesty will suit the average hiker that may not appreciate the degree of spicy food that I like.
Water wise we added the recommend amount which is 250ml and this worked out to be a good consistency. I left this to rehydrate the recommended 10 minutes and this time was also spot on.
The sodium level in this meal is 309mg/100g which is considered ‘mid range’ but having said that the saltiness to this meal wasn’t over overpowering and thats coming from someone who doesn’t add salt to their meals. In fact I think the level of saltiness is one of the reasons I liked this meal.
Protein wise this meals contains 20.7 grams which sits in the lower range of freeze dried meals which isn’t really a negative as such unless you are looking for big protein after long hard days and this is where a meal like The Real Meals Venison Casserole comes in containing 57.8grams.
So what’s the verdict. Is this the best Mexican meal on the market; no, but I did enjoy it and found it to be warming and filling and would be happy to eat this on any hike given the opportunity.
