It hadn’t occurred to me until recently that all my beanies (and I have more than a few) are made from synthetic fibres. So when it came to write this review of the Wilderness Wear Women’s Merino Mid 300 Double Layer Beanie, it really challenged my biases. So why the connection with synthetic beanies? For me it comes down to durability and softness, and as long as I have a double layer version, warmth.
I was hesitant about the durability of a 100% Pure Australian Merino beanie. Wool garments always give the perception of something that is fragile, needing to protection and care.
But I am surprised by how tough this beanie is and having deliberately done my best to give it a hard workout. I have worn it on cold mornings and stuffed it into my pack only to drag it out later in the day. It holds its shape well and doesn’t look tired after regular use. I have washed it in the washing machine despite the washing instructions of ‘WARM GENTLE HAND WASH’ and I’ve even dried it in the drier against the warning of ‘DO NOT TUMBLE DRY’! While I don’t recommend you follow my lead, I was very pleased with the result so thumbs up for durability.
It terms of warmth, this beanie is double layer 300 gsm 100% Australian Merino – a single layer of wool is warm but a double layer is super cosy. So thumbs up for warmth.
The cap fits neatly on my head given the seaming which follows your head shape. The beanie is designed to be worn with the cuff folded up or you can pull the cuff down towards your neck for extra warmth.
There is one aspect about this beanie I find a bit strange – the sizing is XL but I think it should be read ‘One Size’. I’ve never really thought I had a big head until now – I’m still convinced mine is average sized. The fit on my head is snug so if your head is on the larger side or if you have lots of thick hair, then this beanie may not suit you.
This beanie comes in one colour – Black so you’ll save time not having to decide on the colour! But given the great price of $34.95 having no colour choice won’t matter.
All up this beanie does what its meant to – keep your head warm when you need it and survive the rough treatment that comes from outdoor activities – you can’t ask for more than that!
