Recently we reviewed the Wilderness Wear MerinoFusion Light 160 Skull Cap and while I loved that cap Gill wasn’t a fan preferring something a bit warmer so how did the Wilderness Wear Merino Mid 195 Skull Cap go as an option?
This skull cap is made of 100% merino wool and there are two advantages of this. Firstly this cap is really soft and comfortable, its almost luxurious. Secondly being merino wool it has all the advantages that wool has e.g. keep you warm even when damp or wet, wicks the sweat, and minimal odour.
From our perspective this cap is aimed at cold weather rather than cool weather and even though it appears to be quite thin, it provides plenty of warmth. We tested this cap at temperatures ranging from around +4 to -3 Celcius and for me (Tim) I found it to be on the too warm side although Gill appreciated this.
This skull cap is sold as male and female versions but like the Wilderness Wear MerinoFusion Light 160 Skull Cap they appear to be identical. Where this cap is different to the MerinoFusin version is that it covers more of your ears which if you are looking at something that will keep more of your head warm. Colour wise this cap comes in black only, size-wise its on the larger size and fits really well. If you have a larger head or lots of hair this cap has plenty of stretch in it to suit mostpeople.
These caps look good and feel good and at AUD$25.00 RRP they’re great value as well. The cap weighs 28 grams which is pretty impressive as headwear goes.
So with two testers what was the outcome?
The fit and sizing is good but for me its a bit on the warm side. I found that even at -3 degrees Celcius my head was sweating; but that’s me. While I found it really comfortable its a bit too warm for me in all but the coldest conditions.
I found the cap to be a good fit and was lovely and soft. I do feel the cold so this cap was good for cold weather because it covered my ears and provide that extra bit of warmth. The sizing is generous which I like so if you have a good head of hair you’ll still be covered!
