Wilderness Wear Merino Ecotech Sock Review

The Wilderness Wear Ecotech socks have the appearance of old fashioned wool socks from my early hiking days but that’s where the similarity ends. Whereas the old fashioned wool socks were shapeless and itchy, the Ecotechs have propelled this old favourite to a new modern level of comfort, warmth and softness to wear.

These socks are a 3/4 length which is definitely something you would expect from a sock on the warmer side. The toes and the heels have that extra bit of padding in these critical areas to keep you protected on the longer hikes.  The Ecotechs are a 80% Merino wool sock (100% Australian of course) with just enough nylon and elastane to make these socks feel comfortable, non itchy and foot hugging. While I wouldn’t class them as a snow sock they are certainly on the warm side and as someone who doesn’t have an issue with cold feet, these socks are comfortable for me up to about 15 degrees Celcius; beyond that I need a thinner sock. In my case this is the only negative.

These socks come in three standard sizes which will fit pretty much all feet and they also come in a number of reasonably neutral colours but given two of those colours are pink and grape these socks are also aimed at women even though they are sold as a men’s sock. Size-wise these socks are fairly accurate and the size 12-15 suits me well given I usually wears size 15 footwear while hiking. Durability-wise these socks perform well and will last most hikers for many months if not years depending in their usage.

The recommended retail price on these socks is $34.95 which sits in the mid range for a sock of this length and warmth rating. They are reasonably priced for an Australian owned and made sock that uses high quality Australian wool. If you are looking for a long lasting sock for the cooler weather then the Wilderness Wear Ecotech sock is a great option.
