Sea to Summit Delta InsulMug Review

Being able to enjoy your favourite beverage on the trail sounds simple enough to achieve but is actually a luxury. Getting the temperature just right is a big part of the challenge and then comes having the right mug to sip from. The Sea to Summit Delta InsulMug might just be what you need.

I do like to drink out of mugs – on a cold day there is nothing like a mug of hot chocolate or a mug of your favourite soup. The Delta InsulMug will keep your hot choccie hot and your cool water cool. Its hard to describe the effectiveness of this mug – so effective that you may need to add a little cool water to your tea particularly if you’re in a hurry to get back to hiking.

This mug has a patented Protex™ hex pattern base which reduces weight and disperses surface temperature – that means the base won’t be too hot to touch. The Delta InsulMug also has a moulded non-absorbing closed-cell ThermoSkin which will keep your drink at the right temperature. The lid fits snugly into the rim of the mug and comes with a handy pull cord. You can sip with the lid on – which is self-draining lid to ensure a drip-free experience.

The downside with this mug is the size. While you’ll get plenty of your favourite hiking drink, this mug is a struggle to hold for people with smaller hands. It doesn’t have a handle which means it is easier to pack but that also means cupping your hand (or both hands) around the mug is the only holding option.

That said, drinking out of the mug without the lid on is a good experience however the sipping hole in the lid is a bit too big for me. This mug is also suggested as a commuter mug/keep cup but I wouldn’t want to be driving while sipping from the lid – one bump in the road you’ll be wearing your morning coffee!

The Sea to Summit Delta InsulMug is robust and will keep your hiking beverage the way you like. But it is best for those who have large hands. As an average sized female I just don’t have the hand stretch needed to comfortably hold this mug.
