Campers Pantry Penne Pasta Review

As far as freeze dried meals go pasta is the most common space filler. In the meals currently on the market you really don’t have too much of a choice but to accept what is provided. Enter Campers Pantry Freeze Dried Penne Pasta in a stand-alone packet.

While I eat more rice in my day to day life, I still eat a lot of pasta in various forms. However when I go hiking I’m not a fan of cooking, preferring to instead rehydrate my meals. My biggest issue in creating meals for hiking is time. While I will rehydrate some products, on the whole I prefer to buy commercially prepared products where I can.

As a standalone product Campers Pantry Penne Pasta allows hikers to build their meals as they like or if necessary, to bulk up existing meals by mixing through vegetables/meat or having the pasta as a side dish.

The packet contains 500 grams of  penne pasta which when freeze dried weighs 150 grams – this equates to four serves when eaten as a side dish or two serves when used as a standalone meal that has been bulked up with veggies/meat. Either way, this is relatively cheap with packet costing AUD $6.95 RRP.

I rehydrated this meal for about eight minutes with boiling water and it worked out quite well.  Being freeze dried the option also exists to have this as a cold pasta dish.

There are really no negatives with this product but the one thing I will say is this is plain boiled pasta and as such has no real taste – it needs to have spices, vegetables and/or meat added to provide the flavour. It is excellent as a base that allows you to build your own meals. I can see myself adding this Campers Pantry Penne Pasta to my hiking meal rotation with some added veggies and spice, in particular for my lunches.
