Over the past year Campers Pantry have introduced a new range of meals onto the market for outdoor enthusiasts and included as part of this is three desserts to add the the limited range currently available. When I hike I won’t eat desserts every night, particularly during summer, but as the colder weather sets in they become part of my regular meal rotation as I look to boost the amount of calories I eat and to warm me up at the end of the day. These desserts are progressively becoming more commonly available and can also be ordered both online, in store and through the supplier.
The Campers Pantry Cinnamon Rice Pudding was one of those desserts that reminded me of cookie dough as I was very tempted to eat it straight out of the packet. I tried this and was very happy with the taste and texture and had to stop myself from continuing to eat. The taste and texture was what you would have expected from a rice pudding and the end result was that warm contented feeling that you expected from a great dessert. The dehydrated product from the packet was a bit solid so I crushed it down to make it finer which allowed for the water to be absorbed. Unlike the other meals the I have tried from this company the recommended 20 minutes for rehydration was reasonably accurate at least for this offering.
The normal price for these desserts sits around the $10.00AUD mark for a single serve pack which if you compare this to the offerings from Back Country Cuisine the pricing, while dearer, is not that different and just as great tasting.
The meal comes in a bag that is well designed and the bottom opens out to provide a flat base if you want to leave the bowl at home. Unlike Back County and Outdoor Gourmet, the Campers Pantry meals don’t have a tear point to make the food easier to access. This doesn’t bother me as I prefer to use a long handled spoon and leave the bag intact otherwise you can end up a big mess in your rubbish bag.
I do love my desserts and greatly appreciate having a broader range to choose from to provide a bit of variety. I look forward to this one for those longer hikes where desserts play an important role.
