The Campers Pantry Cauliflower and Pea Dahl is one of the newer releases for this company and has automatically become one of my top choices which is saying something for a vegetarian meal as I like my meat.
I’m also a spice lover and while this meal offering wont cause your head to sweat it has just enough kick to create a great taste. For those of you adverse to spice of any type you may want to give it a try at home before you commit to taking it on an overnight trip.
There is a good mix of vegetables in this Dahl and the texture is creamy. It just tastes so dam good. Campers Pantry have recently reprinted all their meal bags and have used photos from Iconic trails from around Australia including the Overland Track as is the case with this meal which helps to reinforce that this is an Australian made meal rather than imported from New Zealand.
The Campers Pantry bag recommends adding 300 grams of boiling water to rehydrate this meal and this amount was spot on so I would suggest sticking with this amount. Having said that you always vary this to suit your own tastes. Campers Pantry also recommend allowing 10 minutes for rehydration with an occasional stir and this time worked out well.
The normal price for these meals sits around the $15.95 mark for a single serve pack which if you compare this to other single offerings on the market is expensive. However these meals are larger is size than most and will suit those of us with large appetites that don’t want to go to a twin serve option so thy work out to be very good value for money.
The meal comes in a bag that is well designed and the bottom opens out to provide a flat base if you want to leave the bowl at home. Unlike Back County and Outdoor Gourmet, the Campers Pantry meals don’t have a tear point to make the food easier to access. This doesn’t bother me as I prefer to use a long handled spoon and leave the bag intact otherwise you can end up a big mess in your rubbish bag.
So what is the final verdict? This has now become one of my equal top choices from Campers Pantry along with their Spaghetti Bolognese so I definite will be adding this to my overnight trips on a regular basis.
