Campers Pantry Beetroot Dip Review

For me dips have been a mainstay of my hiking menu for an easy snack – it makes a very easy lunch that takes minimal time to prepare. Typically I have tended to make and dehydrate my own dips but on a recent trip I found myself with a lack of preparation time and if I’m honest, I just didn’t feel like making them either. Recently Campers Pantry released a range of three dips including Hummus, Spicy Capsicum Dip, and Beetroot Dip. My hike on the Tasmanian Trail provided a great opportunity to test them out.

The first dip I tested was the Beetroot Dip. I must admit that this is one of my favourite dips at the best of times but have never bothered to make it on previous trips. Most companies that make freeze dried foods tend to keep them on the blander side because it’s a safer option and as a dip goes, this definitely falls into that category. Having said that I found it to be very tasty. Commercially prepared dips tend to have a bit of a vinegary taste but not in this case.

This dip comes in a 100 gram packet which is two serves. I found 50 grams was a comfortable serving size, sometimes I would eat it by itself with just a spoon and at other times with flatbread depending on how I felt.

The only negative with this product is the price coming in at around $5.50 per serve so if you feel like making your own, you can do it much cheaper. What it comes down to is can you be bothered or would you pre buy and be done with the effort? For me limited time is an issue for me so I will keep the Campers Pantry Beetroot Dip as part of my hiking rotation.

We Like

  • Not spicy, great for all taste buds
  • Minimal preparation time. All you are doing is rehydrating this dip – just add cold water, and its ready to eat
  • Prepare in a seperate container and use as much or as little as you like
  • Freeze dried. This takes much of the weight out of the meal and helps to limit the weight in your pack

We Don't Like

  • The main negative of any commercially preprepared dehydrated or freeze dried food is the cost. Having said that, this is a dip I would never make myself

Best Uses

  • Great for lunch or dinner
