Its no secret I am a BIG fan of Altra shoes. I wear Altra Lone Peak 4.0 RSM Low hiking shoes (which I love) and I have been wearing the Altra Intuition 4.5 Women’s Running Shoe at least until I wore them out! So when it came time to replace my Intuition 4.5s, I still wanted a super lightweight mesh upper, wide foot box, deep cushioning and zero drop – all the things for which Altra is famous.
And for some reason, I wanted a pair of black running shoes. I’d like to say that my choice was more scientific than this but the Escalante 2 was the only Altra road running shoe I could find in my size!
For those unfamiliar with Altra shoes, the zero drop ensures the heel and forefoot are the same distance from the ground which encourages a low-impact running form. Altra’s Fit4Her™ technology means these shoes are designed for the unique anatomy of the female foot. Another feature is the grid-like grooves in the midsole which allow my foot to flex while also reducing the shoe weight.
These running shoes are so comfortable, I wear them often – they have become the running shoe I continue to wear all day! In the past, my running shoes have only ever been for running because once the exercise was done, they just weren’t comfy enough.
The Altra Escalante 2 shoes are different to the Intuition 4.5s – they fit more snugly for the same size shoe (I have size 9 US in both) but I’m getting to used to that. They do feel more cushioned under foot about which my heels and knees are grateful. The running performance of these shoes is what I would expect from a high performance running shoe noting of course, that I am not in any way a high performance runner! I wear these shoes also as walking shoes and as ‘around the house’ shoes.
The Escalante 2 has a couple of new innovations from the previous version including increased flexibility through more decoupling added in the Altra EGO™ midsole, as well as the outsole. It also has a new knit construction and increased perforations that has increased the breathability. The new insole has also been updated to a longer lasting one although insole wear doesn’t tend to be an issue for me.
The Escalante 2 does have a couple of big negatives. The tongue on this shoe is detached and it has a tendency to slip towards the outer shoe under the laces – not a disaster but more than a little annoying. The second negative is the price. The RRP is cents under $240 AUD which makes them an expensive running shoe option. Dedicated Altra shoe wearers (like me) won’t be deterred but I did get mine for around $199 – I wear them a lot and they are showing no signs of wear despite the constant wear they are getting.
My Black/Black (black upper and black sole) colour choice means I can wear these these shoes for walking and for everyday wear. Coming into winter I will get a lot more wear out of them. Other colour choices include Teal/Lime (that would never do), White (for special occasions I think!), Coral (looks more orange to me), Gray (a bit like a speckled black), Black (with a white sole and white Altra logo on the outside of the shoe) and Rose/Coral (pink between friends!).
The Altra Escalante 2s are another great lightweight running or walking shoe that also look good enough for everyday wear. So if you want a versatile exercise shoe that will take you from the road to the shops, then this is the one for you!
Please note that the Escalante 2 ha snow been replaced with the Escalante 2.5
