I’m running the risk of sounding like a broken record when it comes to my outdoor shoes – I am a BIG fan of Altra shoes and wear them for all adventures including running and fitness training.
The attraction for me is Altra’s ‘designed for women’ thinking embedded in every feature as well as the wide toe box and the Zero Drop design. Those who have issues with plantar fasciitis, may find zero drop shoes difficult to wear so a shoe with a height difference between the toe and heel may be preferred. I used to wear Inov-8 running shoes which aren’t quite zero drop but they are a much narrower fit so are great for those with a slimmer foot than mine.
The Escalante 2.5 shoes are designed for road running so they are super lightweight at 462 grams per pair but don’t compromise on softness underfoot which is important when traversing hard surfaces. The upper of the shoe is an ‘engineered knit’ which gives great breathability in hot weather but this isn’t an issue during cold, dark winter mornings.
Given the lightness of the shoe construction I did wonder if the Escalante 2.5s would last the distance and I’m happy to report they have. I’ve been wearing this running shoe for around 8 months now and there is minimal visible wear on the upper or the outer sole of the shoe. Having said that, this shoe isn’t designed for all-weather or all-terrain and so I’m careful to stick to hard surfaces that aren’t too slippery.
I’m wearing a size 9.5 US (41 EU) which is a bit long for me and given the upper mesh construction, I should have gone with the 9.0 US size.
I do love Altra shoes but there is one thing that drives me mad….the tongue under the lacing slips sideways as soon as I take a step. This is something I’ve seen consistent complaints about so I know its a common experience.
This shoe comes in three colours Black, Grey and Coral. My preference was Black but I couldn’t get them in my size at the time. I opted for Grey which, given it is a very light grey, adds to my large feet distress! I’m not a fan of the Coral but others must like them because that colour is hard to get in any size!
The RRP of these shoes is AUD $239.90 which is typical of shoes of this kind but they often seem to be on sale for under $200.00.
I’ve been very happy with these shoes and will start thinking about what’s next but my next pair is likely to be Black and a size 9!
Yes – I do!
